Description: Galveston newspaper editor M. Whilldin's well-illustrated Immigrants' Guide is an example of a genre of ephemera widely published by railroad companies to encourage people to use their railroads. It contains a colorful chromolithographed county map of central Texas indicating the "Sun Set Route" of the Galveston Harrisburg & San Antonio Railway and thirty-two delightful lithographs of picturesque cities, towns, bridges, and landscapes along the route. The G.H. & S.A. Railway was a new name given to the old Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway Company in 1870. It reached San Antonio in February 1877 and was later acquired by the Southern Pacific Railway Company of California, which also adopted its "Sunset Route" slogan for the whole route between New Orleans and Los Angeles.
