Description: For a period in 1995, there was a temporary shortage of DEMUs on the former BR Southern Region. Consequently for some peak hour services on the Ashford to Hastings line, a 4-CEP with one coach removed was top and tailed by two class 33/1s. Seen at Hastings on 11 May 1995, 33109 "Captain Bill Smith RNR" is awaiting departure on the 17:28 Hastings to Ashford. The 33 was sporting railfreight grey livery at the time and bore the name for a 3-year period from July 1993. Out of view, the other loco is 33116.
