Description: A bottle of 13th Century Grut Bier at the Blind Tiger in New York City. This beer was was brewed by Dr. Fritz Briem at Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan in Bavaria, Germany, based on a 13th century recipe. The name, gruit, comes from the old-fashioned herb mixture used for bittering and flavoring beer, in use before the introduction of hops. The Grut Bier poured a hazy yellow color with a small white head. Complex aroma of herbs and spices. Rosemary! Light mouthfeel but with a fruity freshness. Crisp, spicy herbal flavors, almost like a rich herb tea. At 4.6% abv it was surprisingly complex, and dangeroulsy drinkable. An amazing brew!
