Description: Row houses, located at 1818 (left) and 1820 (right) 19th Street, N.W., in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The Mediterranean Revival-style homes were designed by the local architectural firm of Wood, Donn, & Deming in 1904. They are designated as contributing properties to the Dupont Circle Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Previous occupants of 1818 19th Street, N.W., include: General Benjamin F. Hawkes, a veteran of the Second Seminole War, Mexican–American War, and the American Civil War. Commander Albert L. Key (son of U.S. Senator David M. Key and father of Assistant Secretary of State David McKendree Key), U.S. naval attaché in Peking, commander of the USS Salem, and naval aide to President Theodore Roosevelt. Joseph M. Dixon, a U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, and the 7th Governor of Montana. Edgar E. Clark, chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission Brigadier General Charles G. Treat, a veteran of the Spanish–American War and World War I, and recipient of the U.S. Army Distinguished Service Medal. Major General William Josiah Snow, recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Honor and Companionship of the Order of the Bath, the first Chief of Field Artillery, U.S. Army, a founder of the Field Artillery Journal, and author of Signposts Of Experience. Previous occupants of 1820 19th Street, N.W., include: Ralph Warren Hills, a U.S. diplomat to the Qajar dynasty and Kingdom of Italy, and author of three books. Charles A. Culberson, a U.S. Senator and the 21st Governor of Texas. Lieutenant General Hugh A. Drum, Inspector General of the U.S. Army, recipient of the Silver Star, Distinguished Service Medal, Mexican Border Service Medal, and Cross of War, and the namesake of Fort Drum.
