Description: The Portuguese Pedro Lopez welcomes the Empress of Ceylon, Dona Catharina. The Ceylonese monarch Rajasingha, who ruled from 1582 to 1593 (see the remarks alongside: Koninklijke Bibliotheek, inv. nr. 189 A 6 part II, p. 4) had dethroned Dona Catharina's father. After Rajasingha's death the king of Candy, Vimala Dharma Suriya, attempted to fill the power vacuum. But the Portuguese defeated him and installed Dona Catharina as empress.
