Description: Ever since I was a child I have liked the Botanic Gardens and I still visit about five or six times per year. Thomas Tickell, the famous poet, owned a modest estate in Glasnevin which sold to the Irish Parliament in in 1790 who in turn gave it to the Royal Dublin Society for them to establish the first botanic gardens in Ireland. According to my most recent tourist guide a double line of yew trees, known as "Addison's Walk" still survives from that period. Currently the gardens are best known for its exquisitely restored and planted glasshouses. Many of the glasshouse, especially the Palm House and the Curvilinear Range, are considered to be of architectural importance. The Curvilinear Range was completed in 1848 by Richard Turner, an Irish pioneer in the constructional use of wrought iron; it was extended in the late 1860s. This structure, and the nearby Palm House (built 1884), have been restored.
