Text Appearing Before Image: saying that the guns furnishedthe Western flotilla were less destructive tothe enemy than to ourselves. From March 17th to April 4th but littleprogress was made in the reduction of theConfederate works—the gun-boats firing a fewshot now and then at long range, but doinglittle damage. The mortar-boats, however,were daily throwing thirteen-inch bombs, andso effectively at times that the Confederateswere driven from their batteries and com-pelled to seek refuge in caves and otherplaces of safety. But it was very evident thatthe great object of the expedition — the re-duction of the works and the capture of theConfederate forces—could not be effectedby the gun boats alone, owing to their modeof structure and to the disadvantage underwhich they were fought in the strong andrapid current of the Mississippi. This wasthe t)))inion not only of naval officers, but alsoof General Pope and other army officers. On the 23d of March the monotony of the 44° OPERATIONS OF THE WESTERN FLOTILLA. Text Appearing After Image: long and tedious investment was unfortunatelyvaried in a very singular manner. The Caron-delei being moored nearest the enemys upperfort, under several large cottonwood trees,in order to i^rotect the mortar-boats, sud-denly, and without warning, two of the larg-est of the trees fell across her deck, mortally-wounding one of the crew and severelywounding another, and doing great damageto the vessel. This was twelve days before Iran the gauntlet at Island Number Ten withthe Carojidelet. To understand fully the importance of thatadventure, some explanation of the militarysituation at and below Island Number Tenseems necessary. After the evacuation of NewMadrid, which Cieneral Pope had forced byblockading the river twelve miles below, atPoint Pleasant, the Confederate forces occujjiedtheir fortified y>ositions on Island Number Tenand the eastern shore of the Mississippi, wherethey were cut off by impassable swamps onthe land side.
