Description: Prior to the advent of satellite tracking of tropical cyclones, tropical cyclones were only opportunistically observed while at sea. As a result, the number of tropical cyclones was systematically underestimated. This chart is an attempt to look at the long-term trend in Atlantic tropical cyclone formation while adjusting for lack of data on storms which never struck land.
