Description: Aerial view showing the build-up of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz's Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CinCPac)-Pacific Ocean Areas Command (POA) headquarters. Nimitz moved his headquarters from Honolulu to Guam in January 1945, when this photo was taken, and remained until the end of the war in September 1945. This area is now within the community of Nimitz Hill Annex in Asan, Guam. Areas of the headquarters that were the Japanese naval communications center are within the Fonte Plateau Unit of War in the Pacific National Historical Park, located to the left bottom of this photo. Guam Highway 6 connecting Nimitz Hill to Piti has not yet been constructed. The large open to the left is the current location of Headquarters, Joint Region Marianas, and NAVFAC Marianas. Flag Circle, with housing for senior officers, is to the right. In the distant right, the Glass Breakwater has not been completed and Cabras Island, which was extensively quarried to build the Breakwater, has a higher topography than modern times. In the distant left, the area that will become Inner Apra Harbor has not been dredged and is still a lagoon. Catalog #: NH 58026
