The original image was published in James Redpath, 'The Civil War in Hayti' (Harper's Weekly, 2 September 1865), p. 545, and was captioned: 'Votaries of the God Vaudoux (Snake-Worshipers), Executed for the Crim of Cannibalism at Hayti.'
