Description: Archibald Knox illustration for the front cover of the book 'Castle Rushen' written by Armitage Rigby. The book was published in the Isle of Man in 1927. This illustration is an example of Knox's strong, elegant composition style, use of asymmetry and counterpoint, of lyrical yet controlled curves, typical use of interlacing (influenced by medieval Celtic design), his lettering style, his use of symbolism, and also the Manx subject matter. The birds of prey are symbolic, as when the Isle of Man was captured by England in medieval times, two falcons were to be sent every year to the English Crown. This design is fairly simple by Knox's standards
