Arms: Grand quarterly of 4: 1: Azure, three mullets argent within a double tressure flory counterflory or (Murray); 2: Gules, three legs in armour flexed at the knee and conjoined at the thigh, all proper, garnished and spurred or (Isle of Man); 3: counterquartered I and IV: Argent, on a bend azure three buck's heads cabossed or (Stanley), II and III: Gules, two lions passant argent armed and langued azure (Strange of Knokyn); 4: counterquartered I and IV: Or, a fess chequy azure and argent (Stewart), II and III: Paly of six or and sable (Atholl).In 1786 John Murray, 4th Duke of Atholl (1755–1830) was created Baron Murray, of Stanley in the County of Gloucester, and Earl Strange in the Peerage of Great Britain. These are the arms of Murray, not of Strange. The arms of Strange of Knokyn appear in the 3rd quarter, quartered by Stanley. James Stanley, 10th Earl of Derby, 6th Baron Strange (1664–1736) was childless and was succeeded in the barony by his first cousin once removed James Murray, 2nd Duke of Atholl, who became the 7th Baron Strange as well. He was the grandson of Lady Amelia Anne Sophia Stanley, daughter of James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby. On his death the dukedom and barony separated. He was succeeded in the dukedom by his nephew John Murray, 3rd Duke of Atholl, while the barony passed to his daughter Charlotte, the eighth Baroness. She married her first cousin, the third Duke of Atholl. They were both succeeded by their son, the fourth Duke and ninth Baron. In 1786 he was created Earl Strange and Baron Murray of Stanley in the Peerage of Great Britain.
