Description: This image shows horizontal beds of the Mississippian Arroyo Penasco Group resting on Precambrian gneisses and schists. The latter have been tilted nearly vertical. This is an excellent example of the Great Unconformity and of an angular unconformity. The very flat unconformity surface shows that the Arroyo Penasco Group was deposited on a bedrock peneplain. Photographed just west of Montezuma, New Mexico, United States.
