Description: A view of the action between the French frigate Sybille and British ships on the night of 1-2 February 1783. American War of Independence (1775-83). The Magicienne was a French ship of war which was captured by the British in 1781, and remained in British hands until 1810. The naval battle portrayed in this view took place about 80 leagues (about 356 km or 221 miles) north of San Domingo. Neither side won a victory, both ships being severely damaged.
