Description: On January 10, 2020, four fishers were released in the Nisqually Tribal Use Area at Mount Rainier National Park, bringing the total number released in the southern Cascades of Washington state to 81, and the total released throughout Washington to 256. These fishers were trapped in Alberta, Canada. The Washington State Fisher Recovery Plan aims to restore fishers to habitat from which they were eliminated, by the mid-1900s, due to over-trapping and habitat loss. Partners involved in this restoration project include the National Park Service, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Conservation Northwest, the Calgary Zoo, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Forest Service, Washington's National Park Fund, Pittman-Robertson Funds and State Wildlife Grants, and State Personalized License Plates, among others.
