The scene shows the moment Pánfilo de Narváez, the Spanish captain sent from Cuba to arrest captain Hernán Cortés in Mexico, is defeated and captured by the forces of Cortés in May 1520. Many of the manuscript's illustrations are a copy of the Lienzo de Tlaxcala, a Tlaxcalan manuscript que depicts the Spanish conquest of Mexico which is currently lost.
