Description: Brass with shield to John Calthorp at St Nicholas Church, Blakeney, Norfolk, England. Latin inscription: Hic jacent corpora Johannis Calthorp, armigeri, unii fundatores conventi et Aliciae uxoris ei qui obiit xii die Augustii A(nn)o Dom(ini) MVCIII cuius animae propitietur deus ("here lie the bodies (sic) of John Calthorp, Esquire, one of the founders of the convent and of Alice his wife who died on the 12th day of August in the year of our lord the 1503rd on the soul of whom may god look with favour"). Arms: Chequy or and azure, a fess ermine (Calthorp) impaling A roundel within a bordure engrailed (his wife). According to Farrer, Rev. Edmund, "The church heraldry of Norfolk: a description of all coats of arms on brasses, monuments, slabs, hatchments, &c., now to be found in the county. Illustrated. With references to Blomefield's History of Norfolk and Burke's Armory. Together with notes from the inscriptions attached" , Vol.2, Norwich, 1889,p.375[1][2]: "I. Chequy, a fesse (Calthorpe, Chequy or and azure, a fesse ermine) ; impaling, A roundel, within a bordure engrailed {Astley, Azure, a cinquefoil ermine ; a bordure engrailed. The cinquefoil must have been enamelled on a roundel, which has come away from the brass, leaving only the latter charge.)
