Description: Brumadinho dam "Barragem I". Cross section through the broken dam from the west to the east. The dam is based on soil, not on solid rock. The first dam (black) had been build 1976 with coarse rubbel from mining. In the following decades the dam had been hightend several times. Dam raisings 1 to 4 had been done with compacted soil, each additional small damm had contributed 5 - 8 m in hight. In later years the dam raisings had been done with dams build out of dried tailings. The final dam reached a hight of 86 m.
