Description: A Brush Electric Company arc street light in an illustration by Charles Graham in the January 14, 1882 issue of Harper’s Weekly depicting "The Electric Light in Madison Square, New York". Street arc lighting was demonstrated at the Paris Exposition of 1878 and within a decade scores of cities would have arc lighting systems that were supplanting street gas lighting gaslight systems of the period. In the US the Brush Electric Company set up a central station in December 1880 to supply a 2-mile (3.2 km) length of Broadway in New York City with arc lighting.
