Description: Governor Roger Conant's "Great House", originally at what is now Stage Fort Park in Gloucester in 1625, relocated in 1628 by his successor John Endecott to Salem, on Washington Street north of Church Street.[1] When Rev. Higginson arrived in Salem, he wrote that "we found a faire house newly built for the Governor" which was remarkable for being two stories high.[2] This drawing shows the house after renovations of 1792 that added another floor and facing material. Artist: Edward Scrope Shrapnel.
