Description: The Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele, a large oil-on-oak panel painting completed around 1434–36 by the Early Netherlandish artist Jan van Eyck. It was commissioned by Joris van der Paele, a wealthy clergyman from Bruges who was at the time gravely ill, and intended the work to be both the front piece for an altar and serve as his epitaph.
