Description: Coloured print by Samuel Calvert (1828-1913), depicting Captain James Cook proclaiming sovereignty over the continent of Australia from the shore of Possession Island, Torres Strait in 1770. First published in the Illustrated Sydney News, December 1865. Erroneously depicts the Union Jack, which was not adopted by Great Britain until 1801.
