Description: The Bowen's Creek Road provided a through road from Mount Irvine to Bell's Line of road and shorter route to Kurrajong and the rail head at Richmond. The access road generally follows the pack horse track marked out by C R Scrivener in 1899. Constructed commenced in 1933, during the Great Depression, using unemployment relief funding. At the opening ceremony, the Minister for Labour and Industry, Mr Dunningham cuts the ribbon at the Bowen's Creek Bridge; on his right is H B Morley. The tall man with the hat behind Morley is Captain Francis de Groot; with him is H B Meek, a Sydney barrister with whom de Groot often stayed at Mount Irvine. The party consumed 24 gallons of tea. Francis Edward de Groot (24 October 1888 – 1 April 1969) was a member of the right-wing New Guard of Australia, who was most famous for intervening on horseback during the official opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932, cutting the tape before the New South Wales Premier Jack Lang could do so. Earlier, he had been an antique dealer, and a maker of fine furniture and shop fittings. References: Mount Irvine, a History - Mount Irvine Progress Association 1997.
