The first library was a Carnegie building. Built with the aid of a $50,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie, the famous American philanthropist, the building stood where the current Central Library branch of the Regina Public Library now stands. The building opened on May 11, 1912 . On June 30, 1912 , the Regina cyclone struck the city, severely damaging the brand-new library. The Carnegie foundation again came through, donating an additional $9,500 to pay for reconstruction efforts.
