Description: My yearly homage to Carolina redroot (also called bloodroot). This interesting wetland plant is a member of the bloodwort family (Haemodoraceae) and produces a unique inflorescence of yellow flowers that attract nectaring insects. The fan shaped foliage is also very attractive. Sandhill Cranes love to eat the seeds. A large wet meadow of them bloomed this year by the little frog & duck pond in Juno Dunes Natural Area (south). Native Americans had several medicinal uses for the plant and it's sap has been used for dye.
