Description: Chalcopyrite-quartz from the Tertiary of Colorado, USA. (public display, Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum, Durango, Colorado, USA) This is a sample of a polymineralic hydrothermal vein that has intruded volcanic rocks of southwestern Colorado's San Juan Volcanic Field. The abundant brassy gold masses are chalcopyrite (CuFeS - copper iron sulfide). The whitish material is quartz (SiO2 - silica). The grayish material is probably one or more sulfides - galena or tetrahedrite or petzite. This rock comes from the Idarado Mine, a lead-copper-zinc mine in the San Juan Mountains. Geology & age: Argentine Vein, San Juan Volcanic Field, mid-Tertiary Locality: Idarado Mine, ~2.7 air miles southwest of the town of Ironton, southern Ouray County, San Juan Mountains, southwestern Colorado, USA
