Description: IWM caption : "A German notice written in German, Dutch and French, announcing the death sentence on Captain Charles Fryatt, 27 July 1916. Captain Charles Fryatt was an employee of the Great Eastern Railway and captained the SS BRUSSELS between Southampton and Rotterdam. On 28 March 1915, he attempted to ram and sink the German submarine U33. After this, and several other alleged rammings of German submarines, Captain Fryatt was captured on 23 June 1916 by the crews of the German torpedo boats G101 and G102. He was tried and executed by firing squad on 27 July 1916 and buried in Bruges. His body was later exhumed and brought back to Britain."
