Description: Remnants of chest-tomb of Sir Robert Poyntz (d.1520) lord of the manor of Iron Acton in Gloucestershire, in the Gaunt's Chapel, Bristol, in which he had built the Poyntz Chapel. He married Margaret Woodville, the illegitimate daughter and only child of Anthony Woodville, 2nd Earl Rivers (c. 1440-1483), Knight of the Garter (brother of Queen Elizabeth Woodville who married King Edward IV), by his mistress Gwenlina Stradling, a daughter of William Stradling of St Donat's Castle in Glamorgan, Wales. The shields display left: the arms of Poyntz of Iron Acton (Quarterly of 4 – 1: Poyntz; 2: Clanvowe; 3: de Acton of Iron Acton; 4: FitzNichol) (reference: Maclean, Sir John & Heane, W.C., (Eds.), The Visitation of the County of Gloucester Taken in the Year 1623 by Henry Chitty and John Phillipot as Deputies to William Camden Clarenceux King of Arms, etc, London, 1885, p.130); right: the arms of Poyntz of Iron Acton quartering Woodville (Quarterly of 10 – 1: Barry of eight or and gules (Poyntz); 2: Paly of six or and azure, on a fess gules three mullets or (Clanvowe); 3: Quarterly per fess indented argent and azure (de Acton of Iron Acton); 4: FitzNichol; 5: Argent, a fess and a quarter gules, overall a baton sinister (Woodville with baton sinister for bastardy (legal impediment to full inheritance)); 6: Gules, six escallops or (Scales)(repaired inaccurately as Argent, six escallops Sable); 7: ? (repaired inaccurately? as Argent a lion rampant sable crowned or); 8: Gules, an estoile argent (des Baux, for Margaret of Baux)); 9: Gules, a griffin segriant or (Rivers); 10: Vair (Beauchamp of Hatch)), for an heiress of Woodville (reference: Burkes General Armory, 1884[1]).
