Description: Mars Express HRSC image of a fog-shrouded Argyre Basin and the tall Charitum Montes forming its southwestern rim. The Charitum Montes tower over the Argyre Basin floor, with some peaks topping out at nearly 4 km above the surrounding basin floor. The great depth of the Argyre Basin (in places 4 km below Martian "sea level", where water can exist as a liquid, gas, or solid) allows frequent ground fogs to form, particularly during mornings in the warmer half of the year.

This image uses IR, Green, and blue images overlaid on a higher-resolution panchromatic image and adjusted to approximate what the human eye would see. It was taken by the Mars Express spacecraft on its 350th orbit of Mars, April 29, 2004.
