Description: One of several streets known as the 'Colonies' in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh. The houses, dating from 1861, were built by the Edinburgh Co-operative Building Company when housing reformers decided to break with the Scottish tenement tradition in favour of working-class homes that would provide each family with its own front door and garden. The lack of indoor bathrooms meant that residents used the nearby public Glenogle Baths. Similar 'colonies' on a smaller scale exist in other parts of Edinburgh, such as Abbeyhill, Leith Links, Pilrig, Shandon and Slateford.
