Description: Possible mechanisms of copepod faecal pellet production in the deep ocean. In scenario 1, intact faecal pellets reach the deep ocean via vertical migration of zooplankton, whereas, in scenario 2, faecal pellet at depth result from in situ repackaging of sinking detritus by deep-dwelling zooplankton. The actual mechanisms occurring in the mesopelagic are likely to be a combination of both scenarios.
