Description: Growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae CRE (Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae) from positive blood culture on MacConkey agar. Carbapenemases are enzymes that can hydrolyze a broad spectrum of antibiotics and determine a resistance mechanism that can be transferred from one microorganism to another. There are different types of carbapenemases: the most common is called KPC (Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemasi). A minority of strains, on the other hand, produces NDM carbapenemase (New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase). In Tuscany, an NDM outbreak was reported between November 2018 and May 2019.
