Description: Floating face down, a dead dragonfly, probably a Southern Vicetail, Hemigomphus gouldii, male. Heathcote National Park, NSW Australia, January 2014. Hemigomphus gouldii and Hemigomphus heteroclytus look quite similar. However in this case, Hemigomphus gouldii has its faded yellow collar separated from the stripe on its back. The tips of the appendages at the end of his tail should be able to help, but there is too much ambiguity to make a clear call. Also, Hemigomphus heteroclytus has not been recorded so close to Sydney before, and with a few exceptions is generally found north of the Hunter River.
