The American White Kim, Ulmus Americana, possesses a character peculiarly its own. Of massive growth, it forms a tree with long sweeping branches of a somewhat drooping tendency. It is not a tree of a formal character. When young it forms a somewhat irregular outline, which it loses as it gets more age, but at all stages of growth it has a peculiar beauty of its own. Our illustration represents an avenue of large elms at New Haven, Conn. While no doubt of great beauty twenty years ago, the trees are too close to permit of the majesty of growth of which this tree is capable. Liow-branched specimens for lawn-planting shonld always be specified.
