Description: Philosopher, author, poet, and painter Frithjof Schuon (1907-1998) painted “Apparition of the Buffalo Calf Maiden” in 1959 during the years in which he lived in Switzerland. This image, approved for use on WIkimedia Commons by World Wisdom, is a detail from the larger oil painting which is reproduced on page 123 of Schuon's book “Images of Primordial and Mystic Beauty: Paintings by Frithjof Schuon” (World Wisdom, 2003). Pte San Win (translation: White Buffalo Calf Maiden) is an important figure in Lakota religion. It is said that this spirit brought to the Lakota their seven central spiritual rites, as well as the sacred pipe, which is what she is seen with here. At the left edge of the painting (from the reader's viewpoint), a white buffalo is depicted. When the sacred woman finished transmitting her mission to the Lakota, she walked away, turning into a beautiful young white buffalo, until she was seen no more.
