Description: Front doorway, Putnam Cottage, also known as Knapp's Tavern, East Putnam Avenue, Greenwich, Connecticut. The light red siding on the house looks pink in the bright sunlight. The door opens onto a small hallway with a staircase immediately in front of the door. The front of the building faces south. General Israel Putnam, then staying at the tavern, escaped from a British raiding party in 1779. Legend has it that the general rode his horse down the steep, rocky slope now known as Put's Hill, just to the east of the tavern.
