Description: Engraving: Robert Pool & John Cash. Views of the most remarkable public buildings, monuments and other edifices in the city of Dublin; 1780; facing page 72 Dr Steevens' HospitalIn its time (early eighteenth century) the largest medical hospital, it was built thanks to the philanthropy of Madam Grizel and her brother Richard Steevens (1653-1710), a theologian and a doctor, president of the Royal College of Physicians at the time he died. This man had accumulated huge wealth during his lifetime, and he said in his will that he wanted all this fortune to go to his twin sister, Madam Grizel, but after her death, the wealth had to be used to build a hospital. Directly Madam Gizel decided to begin building the hospital during her lifetime, keeping for herself only £100 a year. The architect in charge was Thomas Burgh and he designed the plans early in 1713, but it wasn’t until 1721 that the work began. Finally in 1733 the hospital was completed and it opened with eighty-seven beds and with the new house of Madam Grizel, where she lived until her death in 1747. One of the important points of the history of this hospital is the important Book Collection bequeathed by Edward Worth, a physician and also one of the original Governors of the hospital, which we can still see today there. The building is now the headquarters of the Health Service Executive.
