Description: An Early Medieval penny of William I (the Conqueror, 1066-87), PAXS type (1083-6). Measures 19.69mm in diameter, weighs 1.19g and has a die axis of 3. The coin is complete but with a fracture from one side almost to the other. Obverse: Bust facing crowned and diademed; to right, a sceptre +PILLELM REX Reverse: Cross pattee; in each angle an annulet containing one letter of the word PAXS +BRVMIIN ON CIC (the II might be an A but it is where the coin has cracked) Mint: Chichester, Moneyer: Brunman Reference: North 848, crown 1 John Naylor, National Finds Adviser, comments: 'This seems to be the first coin minted at Chichester for William I that the PAS has recorded, although EMC/SCBI have 18 coins of this type listed but none of these are provenanced'.
