Description: This photograph was taken at approximately 6:00 PM on 29 October 2012. This photo depicts the Edgartown Harbor Light being surrounded by storm surge flood waters generated during the Hurricane Sandy event. During "normal" conditions, the lighthouse is surrounded by acres of vegetated sandy beach. Flooding and damage to the public access causeway to the lighthouse, as well as flooding around the lighthouse precluded public access. Damage to the causeway and necessary repairs were in process at the time of the posting of this photograph on 4 November 2012. Hurricane Sandy struck the island of Martha's Vineyard with gale-force winds. The island suffered private and public property damage along many coastal areas. Hurricane Sandy's winds generated a storm surge on top of a full-moon tidal cycle. The storm surge caused significant coastal erosion and property damage to various coastal areas around the island. Hurricane Sandy was the eighteenth named storm and tenth hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. Hurricane Sandy was the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, with winds spanning a diameter of 1,100 miles (1,800 km).
