Description: The Edward L. Ryerson Cabin in the Edward L. Ryerson Area Historic District in Deerfield (c. 1927). Ryerson was president of the Ryerson Steel Company. Inspired by a visit to the cabin of his friend Cecil Barnes, Ryerson built his own cabin on a 28 acre tract he purchased on the Des Plaines River. The idea of owning a cabin became popular in the 1930s, probably due to the works by the Civilian Conservation Corps and the ideal that a log cabin can survive the best and worst of times. In the 1940s, Arthur Compton used the cabin as a refuge from his work on the Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago.
