Description: Manuscript of Ecce Homo, extract p. 27, i.e. first paragraph of the section about Also sprach Zarathustra. After Nietzsche's mental breakdown in 1889, this manuscript was in the hands of Heinrich Köselitz ("Peter Gast"), then kept by Nietzsche's family / the "Nietzsche-Archiv" in Weimar led by Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche. The book was not published until 1908. Two changings in the text not done by Nietzsche are visible: The addition (Aphorismus 341) (top right) is from Köselitz. The last line would originally say: [erstaunliche Ins]piration einer jungen Russin, mit der ich damals befreundet war, des Fräulein Lou von Salomé. (amazing inspiration of a young Russian woman who was my friend at that time, Miss Lou von Salomé.) The letter "s" has been added to "Fräulein" by Köselitz (a minor grammatical correction). Obviously someone has crossed out first the words mit der ich damals befreundet war (who was my friend at that time) and von, then also the remaining words after junge Russin (young Russian woman). The simple replacement "Lou von Salomé" underneath the line is by Köselitz. This is how the Nietzsche-Archiv sent the manuscript to the independent publisher Raoul Richter in 1908. Richter, however, did not take this serious and had the full line printed (like all following editions). Three similar deletions in the Ecce Homo manuscript are listed e.g. in the commentary to the Kritische Studienausgabe (Colli-Montinari-edition). The story of the Ecce Homo text is fairly complicated.
