Description: Entrance to Pitstone Green Museum. The plaque next to the roller reads: This support roller, installed at Pitstone Cement Works in 1936, is one of 12 carrying No.1 Rotary kiln. It is set at an angle of 3º so that the rate of flow of the chalk and clay is controlled for long enough to allow the chemical process to take place at temperatures up to 1700ºC. Each roller weighed about 6 tons and carried a weight of about 38 tons. It was made by F L Smidth for Tunnel (later Castle) Cement which provided local employment from 1937 to 1991. For further information about the cement works visit the Pitstone Green Museum.
