Description: Pyotr Pavlovich Yershov (1815 – 1869) – a Russian poet, novelist and playwright. Lifetime portrait of Pyotr P. Ershov by Nikolay Madzhi (Maggi) (end of 1850s), is considered as the most reliable image of the author of «The Little Humpbacked Horse». Nikolay Gaetanovich Madzhi (Nicola Maggi) was the son of Gaetano Maggi, a Venetian forced to emigrate to Russia following the Austrian occupation of 1849. He passed the final exams at the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts. This portrait was discovered i 2004 in the manuscript department of the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg, from the archive of collectors Alexei Fedorovich and Peter Kartavovyh The undated portrait has a size of 26 by 20 cm, oil on cardboard and framed by an oval. It shows a middle-aged Ershov against the sky with pink clouds, wearing a black coat, white shirt and a tie.
