Description: NSF’s Office of Legislative and Public Affairs (OLPA) staff invited staff from the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee’s Subcommittee on Research and Technology to visit NEON’s Front Royal, Virginia, site. The field visit took place in August 2015. NEON is NSF’s National Ecological Observatory. When it’s completed, NEON will be a continental-scale research platform for long-term study of the impacts of climate change, land-use change and invasive species on ecological systems. Operating on 3,200 acres of forest that is home to the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, the Front Royal location is part of NEON’s mid-Atlantic region. NEON has 20 regions, or domains.
