Description: The moment of inertia I=∫r2dm for a hoop, disk, cylinder, box, rectangular plate, rod, and spherical shell/solid can be found from this figure. Note that I does depend on w or t. The first figure applies to either a thin disk or a long cylinder about the axis shown. For a hoop or shell, take the limit that r1→r2. For a solid, let r1=0. The second and third figures apply to a box or plate, depending on the magnitude of t. For a thin rod, let w and t both vanish. The fourth figure contains formulas for both the spherical shell and solid sphere of uniform mass density.
