Description: Stained glass panel, early 20th century. This painted and leaded glass 'lancet' window panel was discovered in a store at Guy's Hospital in 2016. Conservation cleaning removed layers of dirt to reveal an iconic and celebratory portrait of Florence Nightingale with soldiers and nurses from the Crimean and first World War. The glass panel may have come from Riddell House - a nurse's home established for St. Thomas' Hospital and the Nightingale Training School. Queen Mary attended the opening of Riddell House in 1937. The Times reported ' A notable feature of the new home is its furnishing, which makes it very much like a well appointed private house. Lady Riddell has provided many beautiful pieces of furniture together with a large number of pictures.....arranged to excellent effect in the sitting- rooms and corridors'. This glass portrait of Florence may be the only surviving treasure from the home.
