Image: Former Mechanics' Institute, Keighley
Description: These old buildings once belonged to Keighley College, but the institution recently moved to a more modern property so the structures here are currently being mothballed by the council. Designed by Lockwood and Mawson - architects of many of the grandest structures in Bradford - the building on the left of this photo originally housed the Mechanics Institute and is an important component of Lord Street. It dates variously from 1887, 1914 and 1932 and is constructed of dressed sandstone with a blue slate roof. Keighley, whilst it has more than a fair share of concrete, retains a lot of northern heritage from a tapestry of beautiful old Victorian buildings which are liberally scattered throughout the town centre. This photograph can be found in its original resolution online in this set of images.
