Description: This is millionaire industrialist and library philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, pictured with assembled dignitaries for the laying of the foundation stone of Waterford Free Library at Lady Lane - one of five free libraries in Waterford that Carnegie sponsored. Carnegie had arrived in Dublin on 18 October 1903 and stayed overnight in the Gresham Hotel, before travelling to Waterford. As well as laying the foundation stone, Carnegie received the Freedom of Waterford, before moving on to Limerick and Cork to lay foundation stones for free libraries in those cities.
