Description: Francis M. Cunningham, shown here c. 1907, won the U.S. Medal of Honor for his display of gallantry during the American Civil War. A native of Somerset, Pennsylvania, he served as a 1st Sergeant with Company H of the 1st West Virginia Cavalry (Union Army). After having been wounded in action, he captured the battle flag of the 12th Virginia Infantry (Confederate Army) while engaged in hand-to-hand combat during the Battle of Sailor's Creek, Virginia on April 6, 1865.
