Description: French gendarmes were the successors to the medieval knight, only were regularly embodied and professional soldiers. Superbly equipped and lavishly dressed, they were the ultimate close combat cavalry. Here the gendarmes, from the early 16th century, are all wearing complete bases, a sort of richly embroidered sleeveless jacket, over their armour. (part of picture in illuminated manuscript c. 1510, describing skirmish outside Genoa in 1507)
